President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate to various Nigerian foreign missions and the United Nations, signaling a major step in the administration’s foreign policy agenda.
The latest postings, announced on Friday, March 6, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, follow the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees in December last year. The list features a strategic mix of 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career ambassadors, including several high-profile political figures and seasoned experts.
Among the prominent non-career appointees, former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has been posted to Germany, while former presidential aide Reno Omokri will represent Nigeria in Mexico. Other notable deployments include former Minister of Interior Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau to China, former Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole to Canada, and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who has been designated as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Former governors and lawmakers also feature prominently, with Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi assigned to Greece, Okezie Ikpeazu to Spain, and Senator Ita Enang to South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that diplomatic clearance, known as agrément, has already been received from the United Kingdom for High Commissioner-designate Aminu Dalhatu and from France for Ambassador Ayo Oke. Formal requests for clearance have been dispatched to other host nations in accordance with international diplomatic protocols. In anticipation of their resumption, President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately commence a comprehensive induction program for all the envoys to ensure a seamless transition into their respective roles across Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
